John Constable · Stonehenge, 1835
A late watercolour, and the only one of Constable's major subjects with no people, no cattle and no work going on. He added the double rainbow and a hare running in the foreground. When he exhibited it he attached a note calling the stones a mysterious monument standing remote from anything to do with the events of past ages.
