A cart stands in the shallows of the Stour at Flatford, where Constable's father owned the mill, and the cottage on the left belonged to a tenant called Willy Lott who is said to have barely left it. What looked unfinished to London critics was the point: the sky is painted as fast-moving weather, and the flecks of white light on the water were mocked as snow.
