John Everett Millais · The Bridesmaid, 1851
Painted when Millais was twenty-two and deep in the Pre-Raphaelite habit of loading a picture with signs. The girl is passing wedding cake through a ring, a piece of Victorian folklore that was supposed to show you a vision of your future husband if you did it nine times. Her hair is given more canvas than her face.
