The woman at the easel is the painter Jane Emmet de Glehn, and the man draped over the stone balustrade is her husband Wilfrid, also a painter. Sargent has caught them not working: she has stopped, he has given up entirely. The fountain and the ruined Italian garden get the same quick, confident handling as the two of them.
