John William Waterhouse · The Lady of Shalott, 1888
Tennyson's cursed weaver leaves her tower, unchains a boat and drifts down to Camelot, singing, dying as she goes. Waterhouse gives her three candles with two already out and a tapestry trailing into the water. The willow and the reeds are painted with far more precision than the figure, which makes the whole scene feel observed rather than staged.
