Katsushika Hokusai · The Great Wave off Kanagawa, 1829–33
One sheet from a series of thirty-six views of Mount Fuji, and the mountain is the small white triangle in the trough of the wave, not the subject you first see. Three boats are underneath it, crewed and full. The deep blue is imported Prussian pigment, then newly available in Japan, and it is what lets the water go that dark.
