Leonardo Da Vinci · Lady with an Ermine, 1489–91
The sitter is Cecilia Gallerani, a teenager at the Milanese court. The animal is a play on her name, since the Greek for weasel is galé, and the ermine was also a badge of her patron. She is turning to look at something outside the picture, which was an unusual thing for a portrait to do, and the hand holding the animal is painted with more care than her face.
