Leonardo Da Vinci · Mona Lisa, 1503–06
The softness is deliberate. Leonardo built the face from dozens of near-transparent glazes, letting the edges of the mouth and eyes dissolve so the expression never quite settles. She is painted on a poplar panel, not canvas, and the wood has curved with age. She was a reasonably well-known picture until 1911, when a museum employee walked out with her under his coat and made her the most famous painting on earth.
