Leonardo Da Vinci · Vitruvian Man, 1490
A pen and ink drawing, not a painting, made as a note on a problem the Roman architect Vitruvius had set: how a human figure fits both a circle and a square. Leonardo's answer was to shift the centre, putting the square's centre at the groin and the circle's at the navel. The mirror-writing around it is his working.
