Mary Cassatt · Maternal Kiss, 1896
Pastel, worked loosely enough that the paper shows through the mother's dress while the two faces are finished. Cassatt made the subject her own over thirty years and kept sentimentality out of it by watching the mechanics: how a child's hand grips, how the weight is carried, where the arm goes.
