Mary Cassatt · Mother About To Wash Her Sleepy Child, 1880
A mother holding a sleepy child against her, one hand supporting the head. Cassatt watched the mechanics of it closely, and the picture turns on where the weight is carried rather than on any exchange of looks. She used family, friends and hired models, and never married or had children herself.
