Mary Cassatt · The Boating Party, 1893–94
A boating party seen from inside the boat, with the oarsman's dark back in the near foreground blocking a third of the canvas. The composition is lifted from Japanese prints, which Cassatt collected: high horizon, no middle distance, and a strong diagonal cutting the picture in two.
