Mary Cassatt · The Child's Bath, 1893
Seen from above, at an angle no one would take unless they meant to. Cassatt had been looking hard at Japanese prints, and took from them the high viewpoint, the flattened space and the willingness to let three different patterns fight in one frame. The subject is the least sentimental version of its kind: a hand around a foot, water in a jug, a job being done.
