Michelangelo · The Creation of Adam, 1512
Painted on a ceiling, roughly twenty metres up, on wet plaster that had to be finished the day it was laid. The two hands do not touch and never will, which is the point. The red mantle behind God, filled with figures and cut in a particular curving shape, has been argued since the 1990s to resemble a cross-section of the human brain.
