Ohara Koson · Blooming Azalea in Brown Pot, 1920–30
An azalea in a brown pot, treated as a portrait of a plant. The graded background is produced by wiping ink across the block by hand before each impression, so every sheet in an edition is slightly different, and the gradation is the printer's work rather than the designer's.
