Ohara Koson · Blossoming Cherry on a Moonlit Night, 1932
A woodblock print, built from separately carved blocks inked one after another, in the shin-hanga manner that revived Japanese printmaking for a twentieth-century market. Koson worked almost entirely in birds and flowers. The moon is left as bare paper, the branch is placed off-centre and high, and the whole picture is arranged around the empty space it leaves.
