Ohara Koson · Egrets and Reeds in Moonlight, 1926
Egrets among reeds under a moon, with the moon left as bare paper and the sky graded by hand at the press. Koson made night subjects repeatedly, and they depend entirely on the printer's ability to lay a smooth tone, since the designer supplies only the shapes.
