Ohara Koson · Great Spotted Woodpecker in Tree With Red Ivy, 1925–36
A woodpecker on a trunk wrapped in red ivy, the bird angled up the diagonal of the tree. Koson works in flat colour with no modelling, so the whole illusion of a solid bird rests on the drawing of the outline and the placing of the marks in the plumage.
