Ohara Koson · Kingfisher With Lotus Flower, 1900–45
A kingfisher and a lotus, printed from separately carved woodblocks with each colour laid down flat and unshaded. Koson designed hundreds of these bird-and-flower subjects, and the compositional rule is consistent: one creature, one plant, a strong diagonal, and a great deal of empty paper.
