Ohara Koson · Long-Eared Owl in Ginkgo, 1900–30
An owl on a ginkgo branch, facing out, with the fan-shaped leaves cut cleanly against a graded sky. The colour is laid down in flat, unmodulated areas because each one is a separate carved block, and the graded wash behind is done by wiping ink across the block by hand before each impression.
