Ohara Koson · Monkey Hanging From Bamboo Branch, 1900–30
The monkey hangs by one arm from a bamboo stem, the whole weight of the animal carried by a single curving line. Koson leaves most of the sheet empty. In a woodblock print that emptiness is deliberate labour: the blank areas are the parts of the block that had to be cut away.
