Pál Szinyei Merse · The Balloon, 1878
A hot-air balloon rising over a meadow, with the figures on the ground watching it go. Szinyei Merse was painting in Hungary in a high-keyed, open-air manner at almost the same moment the French Impressionists were, with no contact between them, and was largely ignored for twenty years afterwards.
