Paul Cézanne · Harlequin, 1888–90
A harlequin in a diamond-patterned costume, painted with the figure slightly too tall for the space and the floor tipping forward. Cézanne used his son as the model. The distortions are deliberate: he was working out how to make a painting hold together as a constructed object rather than a window.
