Paul Gauguin · Tahitian Woman with a Flower, 1891
Gauguin arrived in Tahiti in 1891 looking for somewhere untouched by Europe and found a French colony with a post office. The portraits he made there flatten the modelling and raise the colour, owing as much to the medieval stained glass and Japanese prints he already admired as to anything he found.
