Paul Gauguin · The Cellist (Portrait of Upaupa Scheklud), 1894
A portrait of a Tahitian musician with his instrument, painted on Gauguin's first stay. The background is a flat decorated field rather than a room, and the figure is outlined and filled almost like a stained-glass panel, which was the method he had worked out in Brittany before he ever left France.
