Paul Nash · Landscape of the Moon's First Quarter, 1943
Nash spent his last years painting the sun and moon over the English landscape as presences rather than light sources. The forms are hard-edged and the colour is unnatural, and the landscape underneath is real country near Oxford, which is what stops the pictures tipping into pure abstraction.
