Pierre-Auguste Renoir · Dance at Bougival, 1883
One couple, one dance, the whole picture turning on the angle of her head as she looks away from him. The model was Suzanne Valadon, who was painting herself by then and would be taken seriously as an artist within a decade. Renoir has let the background blur into hats and glasses so nothing competes with the two figures and her red bonnet.
