Sandro Botticelli · The Birth of Venus, 1485
Venus arrives on a shell, blown to shore by the winds at the left while a companion hurries forward with a cloak. Botticelli painted it in tempera on canvas rather than the usual wooden panel, which is part of why the surface looks so pale and dry, almost like fresco. The figure's pose comes from an antique statue type known as the modest Venus.
