School of Fontainebleau · Gabrielle d'Estrées and One of Her Sisters, 1594
Two women sit in a bath, and one pinches the other's nipple, which in the visual language of the French court announced a pregnancy. The woman being pinched is Gabrielle d'Estrées, mistress of Henri IV, and the ring she holds is presumably his. Behind them, in a lit room, a servant sews infant clothes. Nothing about it is accidental.
