Vincent Van Gogh · Almond Blossom, 1890
Painted as a gift for a baby. Van Gogh's brother had just had a son and named him Vincent, and this went to hang above the cot. He borrowed the composition from Japanese woodblock prints: branches cropped hard by the frame, no horizon, no ground, just blossom against a flat sheet of blue.
