Vincent Van Gogh · Fritillaries in a Copper Vase, 1887
Van Gogh painted flowers in his Paris period largely as colour exercises, working out how complementary colours behave next to each other before he went south. The copper vase and the dark ground are there to make the yellow do something, and the brushwork is already going in visible separate strokes.
