Vincent Van Gogh · Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette, 1885–86
A teaching skeleton from the academy at Antwerp, where Van Gogh was enrolled and bored, given a lit cigarette. It is a student's joke at the expense of the drawing-from-the-antique curriculum, painted small and quickly. He never exhibited it, and it is the only work of his that is funny on purpose.
