Vincent Van Gogh · Sunflowers, 1888
Painted to decorate a bedroom. Van Gogh was expecting Gauguin in Arles and made a series of sunflower canvases to hang in the room he had prepared for him. The yellows are chrome-based pigments that were new and cheap, and some of them have dulled since. He signed this one on the vase.
