Winslow Homer · Breezing Up (A Fair Wind), 1873–76
Three boys and a man in a catboat heeled over on a good wind, painted from the New England coast where Homer spent his summers. The composition leans the whole picture along the diagonal of the boom. Under the surface, X-rays show a second sailing boat that Homer painted out of the empty water at the right.
